thats fine if your parents have employer health insurance . we do not. when i went to graduate school also remember getting free health coverage at the university. got my wisdom teeth removed gratis, but back then health care costs were pretty reasonable.now they are just ridiculous. I had to get rabies shots this year, and i medicare were billed several thousand dollars for them. however at umass amherst i believe that that the students( or parents) pay a separate fee for using campus health services. this is in addition to the $2700 or so insurance cost. Now i assume that once somebody hits 18 if they did have a medical catastrophe they would normally just go to the emergency room like any illegal immigrant and get their needs taken care of, and if need be file for bankruptcy. I admit when i was in graduate school i did not give that possibility a second thought. I imagine that the likelihood of a medical catastrophe for a college student who is in good health, not involved in a car accident and does not abuse drugs or alcohol to be very very small. so from my point of view this $2700 represents some sort of regressive tax for parents who dont benefit from having employer health insurance.
