We need a debt jubilee, a reset before things will improve.

Haircuts are a form of re-set. Plus, they destroy the ability to borrow more except at onerous rates, a good thing. Unfortunately, they cannot be done 'fairly' so bad things happen to the little guys, either through reduced pension benefits or through simple diminution in value.
