Kanter Worldpanel ComTech Smartphone Installed Base and Share by OS & Country

The latest Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Data (source linked below) compares the installed base of smartphones broken down by OS in Australia, the US, and in the 5 major European markets (France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain) as it existed in June 2011 (w/e 12 June) and as it now exists (as of mid-June 2012).

Unlike most of the sell-in/sell-out/usage share data that is published Kanter breaks out both of Microsoft's smartphone OSs (Windows Mobile and Windows Phone) separately, and that's helpful since despite caveats from the research agencies many individuals think that the Windows Phone installed base and its share is declining, while it is actually growing slowly QoQ while the older Windows Mobile base (which was still shipping through the end if 2011 and into Q1 2012 is shrinking rapidly.

Regardless how you cut it Android dominates in Europe's major markets with share ranging "from 49.6% in Italy to a massive 84.1% in Spain."

It’s also interesting to note, however that although Android’s share is high in the USA market, it has decreased by 6.8% points over the year while Apple's iOS share and Microsoft's Windows Phone share has grown 8.7% and 1.2% YoY respectively at the expense of Android and RIM (-4.3%) YoY.

In the 7 major markets Kanter tracks they see the Windows Phone installed base has increased from 15.2 million units in June 2011 to 24.7 million units in June 2012 (+63% YoY). The base is small but the growth is still reasonably significant.
