Only the hard right opposes abortion rights today. And those people aren't going to be voting for Obama. The reality is that abortion is here to stay.

I think you underestimate what Rice would do in terms of the black vote. There are a LOT of conservative blacks who supported Obama last time because of his blackness, and who would love to have a black alternative this time around. Rice brings that to the table, as well as pretty impressive foreign policy credentials that neither Obama nor Biden can come close to.

Winning this election is critical, and if the Rs move too far to the right they're going to kill their changes with independents. That would be a serious mistake. I think Rice is a good choice for that reason if no other.
