Recently, BMW announced service free concept of owning a BMW. Only spend money on tires and gasoline. BMW design is fairly conventional and stand the test of time without much service needed.

This concept can be extended to some older cars that have reputation of lasting 600,000 to 1 million miles. The problem is the auto body rotted beyond repair.

So, if you are lucky, an old car without rust can be found. Then you can repair most of the moving parts to get another 70,000 miles of service free operation. The basic concept of restoration of classic cars.

I have restored a 1990 VW Vanagon and a 1998 VW new Beetle. the new Beetle had special attention paid to contact resistance problems of harness. Crimped wires loosen after many miles of vibration, giving random electrical failures along the way. This contact resistance problem also surfaced on a 1984 BMW 325e. Every so often, contact resistance had to be restored by starting the car over again.. But it has been livable.

The American autoparts replacement manufacturing industry had been improving. Muffler that last only three years, can extend to 5 years. Some ceramic coating has been seen. Some can use octane 89 to extend muffler life. Brake pads metallic material made them last longer. But its mostly learning how to drive to make brake pads last longer. Several slowing braking allow more cooling to the brake pads, do last longer..Disk brake rotors rusty is an indication you brake too hard, too hot. High temperature synthetic engine oil do not need frequent changing. Liquid wax car washing can keep rust away better.

And there are many other knowledge base to keep cars trouble free for 70,000 miles more.
