Actually opinions on abortion are changing with younger people being more negative on it. As for Rice attracting black votes, I doubt it. Except for conservative blacks, getting blacks to vote AGAINST a black President (even if they recognize he's a failure and rationalize him as mixed-race) is too much to expect. Much easier to get unenthused people to stay home. Lastly, I don't buy the idea Republicans should 'move to the center' to attract independents. Independents are mostly wishy-washy voters swayed toward whichever party has the most enthusiasm and looks like a winner. Follow the Reagan model, not the Ford/McCain model.
