I live in Kentucky, so I am quite familiar with what you are saying. If you look at States like Kentucky and West Virginia, the demographics are old, white an uneducated. The politicians of both parties understand that, and play accordingly. It is a hoot watching smart, well educated, public officials saying the dumbest damn things you can imagine in order to get elected. Unfortunately, a well functioning democracy actually requires an educated and informed electorate.....
