I think it has become a lot more personal, judging from some of the name calling on the unmoderated threads. People used to be more polite, I think. Back in the day both sides still thought the other side was idiotic- I mean Nixonites versus Kennedy supporters? Not a lot of common ground there- but the rules of society kept people from being quite as hell bent on personal destruction as they are now. You didn't have places like the internet where you could be an absolute boor, and remain anonymous, so you really had no repercussions for your aggressive behavior. I feel that the lack of punishment for bad behavior on the internet has allowed people to become less well behaved in general- I mean look at the depths to which talk radio stoops. And sure, that's not the only cause- "reality" shows have also helped to coarsen our lives. But taken all together, it's just made the world a much more unpleasant place.

My way of dealing with that is making sure I don't have to interact with people who are going to be unpleasant. I suspect that's the way a lot of people manage this new societal mix of virtual and 3d realities.
