If there is a change by Buffet in those 10 stocks as reflected in his holdings a reduction and/or increase, then how do you change the initial position. What if he decides to close out one of those positions? What do you replace it with?

It might be easier to just use the stocks from the link (ie those 38 stocks) and measure the performance from the total market value before & after. That's one thought.

You could just use the Berkshire stock price as the measure. Or even just take his top 10 holdings.

You need some easy way to reflect his changes and/or updates to his original 10 picks.

What ever is used, you are correct that we need to define the specific formula for calculating the actual annual return.

The WEB link does show the different activity: sold out, new positions, increases, decreases. At the top is the total Mkt Value and sector weighting. They also list the reporting date too.
