Strategy Analytics: Latest Forecasts (includes Microsoft's OSs in US)
>> Microsoft to Capture 4 Percent Smartphone Marketshare in United States in 2012
Strategy Analytics PR Boston, MA July 18, 2012
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system will capture 4 percent share of 123 million smartphones sold in the United States market during 2012, rising steadily from 3 percent share in 2011. Nokia, HTC and Samsung will be among the main hardware vendors driving growth.
Scott Bicheno, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "Despite ongoing economic volatility, we forecast 123 million smartphones to be sold in the United States in 2012, growing 21 percent from 102 million units in 2011. Microsoft captured 3 percent share of all smartphones sold in the United States during 2011, rising steadily to a forecast 4 percent share in 2012. Nokia, HTC and Samsung have some of the biggest Microsoft smartphone portfolios at present and they will be three main hardware vendors driving growth this year."
Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, "Microsoft is making a determined push to crack the United States because it is the most valuable and influential smartphone market in the world. However, Microsoft's US smartphone market share remains relatively niche at present and breaking the stranglehold of leaders Android and Apple will not be easy. To grow further, we believe future versions of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 platform will need to dramatically improve support for advanced technologies like multi-core chipsets, enhance the Marketplace app store, expand the number of phone models available from major partners like Nokia or Samsung, and consider reducing the license fees it charges per unit to smartphone makers."

Summary: Android and Apple iOS combined will account for the vast majority of all global smartphone sales in 2012, while the rapid decline in sales of Symbian and BlackBerry will continue. Looking forward to 2017, Android and Apple iOS will remain the dominant smartphone platforms, but their combined share will have declined. The main beneficiary of this decline will be Microsoft, although we also forecast nascent platforms such as Tizen and Firefox OS to grow in popularity, as the benefits of HTML5-based ‘cloud phones’ become more apparent. This report forecasts global smartphone sales, by 11 operating systems, for 88 countries worldwide, from 2007 to 2017. Almost every major country worldwide is covered, including United States, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. This report can be used by operators, software developers, content developers, handset vendors, component makers, car manufacturers and other stakeholders to determine the size and growth rate of the huge global smartphone OS market.

Tablet Sales
Summary: Global tablet sales will grow a healthy 65% to 110.5 million in 2012 and 311 million by 2016. Higher volumes will be driven by a combination of robust consumer demand in the emerging regions, faster than expected multiple ownership levels within existing tablet households, continued demand for Apple iPad products in both the consumer and enterprise markets and a promising introduction of Windows 8 tablets by year end. This report forecasts global tablet sales by 6 major regions and 88 countries from 2010 to 2016.
