New residential construction for June signaled continued signs of recovery. There were 760,000 new housing starts during the month, which was better than economists' estimates of 745,000. However, building permits missed estimates as the headline reading came in at 755,000 versus the 765,000 consensus.

Building permits track the changes in government issued new building permits from the prior month. Housing starts track the changes in the number of new residential buildings that began construction during the month. Both signal the health of the US housing market.

Larger-than-expected increases in housing starts and building permits suggest increased household income and in turn an economic expansion, and vice-versa.
