But this version is a bit of a ramble, and you can tell, because Obama never repeated this riff. And the looseness suggests that Obama left out a sentence or a clause. "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that." Did he mean that you, small businessman, didn't build the roads and bridges?
OK, I get it now. The line is being quoted completely out of context, and Obama wasn't saying that small business owners didn't build their businesses. He was saying that the small businesses depend on things like roads and bridges, and that the small business owners didn't build those.

But of course, the right will take this and run with it, completely ignoring the fact that their take on it is distorted and dishonest.
