McCain Defends Clinton Aide Huma Abedin

HE SAYS GOP ATTACKS ON MUSLIM DEPUTY ARE 'SINISTER'

(NEWSER) – John McCain took on a group of fellow Republicans on the Senate floor today, blasting them for their ill-founded attacks against Deputy Secretary of State Huma Abedin. Michele Bachmann and four other House Republicans have demanded Abedin be investigated for distant alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. "To say that the accusations … are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite," McCain declared, according to CNN. "These allegations about Huma … are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman."

McCain never mentioned Bachmann and company by name, but he didn't mince words about their claims. "These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma's family," McCain said. They "have no logic, no basis, and no merit. And they need to stop now." (See BuzzFeed for video.) Abedin was in the news for another reason today, too; she gave an interview with her husband, Anthony Weiner.
