Comdex is really the Microsoft exposition which is why Sun doesn't go and it's probably that line of thinking that kept Apple away this year, too. Perhaps you have heard of Visual Basic. There are over 1.5 million developers using it for internal business applications and it's essentially a language slapped onto a runtime environment slapped onto Windows. The language can be compiled into a much faster executable, but it's still a very poor language in terms of the ability to coordinate more than one developer, to reuse existing code, and it's just a poor language in general. It has taken them about 8 years to get to this level of technology and that many developers. In the coming months, the work product of an army of 700,000 Java developers will start to flood over the dam and if you have any question about the validity of this technology see the IBM and Lotus websites -- you already know what you will find on the Sun site.
