The lawyers have quite a cartel going

Yep.. just finally closed out a distasteful estate issue surrounding my father's death a few years ago. Since we had litigation going on, I decided to leave it open until most of the settlements were resolved.

So we retained an attorney for the probate, paying $500.. Initial probate expenses were only about $300, so I figured the remainder would be around $200.. I told the attorney a few years back that I would be in touch when we decided to close probate.

Anyway.. back in January, my mother received a letter from the attorney stating that she was doing a "records review" and wanted to inquire about how decisions regarding closing probate. She charged us what remained of our retainer, PLUS $2 (total $502)..

Geezus.. was my mother pissed off.. and so was I. She was generating "make work" in order to collect a fee from us. And then having the unmitigated gall to add $2 to the retainer she already had possession of??!!!!

If she REALLY wanted to know what was going on, she could have billed us for the 5 minutes it would take to call me, or my mother. But no.. she had to write an unsolicited letter and charge us for it.

I thought about contesting the billing, but frankly, I just want the damn thing over with. So I finished up last Monday and good riddance to her.
