Repairing bridges on the Rail Road took me into the North of Ontario to places where Bears were more numerous than people . West of Long Lac and maybe 10 miles East of Lake Nipigon . We would load a work train with supplies and head North with the melting snow doing jobs along the way . The nearest highway might be 50 to 75 miles to the South .

By July we would be at our farthest North and it was there the bears were numerous . One night the cook cleaning up after supper took a bag of garbage out the back door a waiting bear grabbed it out of his hands .

My car was next to the cooks and the garbage bin . Went out on the back deck one night to look at the stars coming back inside with the door not even closed behind me was a loud thud on the deck . In the morning he was sitting off to the side with a garbage bag between his legs and his paws sorting through the left overs .

The cook was new and a lock was found to secure the bin . Taking a city guy into the woods can be risky .
