Generating growth in a developed market does show that the Lumia WP product is a competive offering. The original iPhone had no competition. Android was desired by carriers to be competition. Those factors are less prevalent for a new entrant today.
I agree that the Lumia line is competitive.

But where do you get the idea that there was no competition when iPhone was launched in 2007? What about the Blackberry? Windows Mobile devices from Palm and other companies were also available, not to mention various Nokia phones based on Symbian. And Palm had Palm OS phones, too, including the very worthy Treo.

In fact, one of the big knocks against the iPhone when it was still just a rumor was that the smartphone market was highly competitive, and that Apple had never operated in an area where they had had to face such stiff competition. (Evidently, the people who said that didn't believe the personal computer business was competitive.) Thus, it was said, the iPhone was sure to fail.

I realize that Apple single-handedly redefined the term "smartphone." But they didn't do it by dropping the iPhone into a green field that nobody had ever set foot in before.

All that having been said, I do believe the differences between the competitive forces Apple face at the iPhone's launch and the environment into which the Lumia line was born , are quite significant, and render this comparison less meaningful.
