The bill for my youngest who graduated in May was $59k for tuition room and board for this past year.
A lot of the good private colleges are charging over $60k for next year.

Instead of ginning up interest in more students getting more loans, our Big Government Dept of Education ought to be doing something about this instead of squandering money on useless crap.

The path forward to solve this problem is clear. With the Harvard and MIT initiatives on Internet-based education, we need a high-speed track to put the best education curricula on line in such a way that accredited degree programs are available at a fraction of the cost.

There is no reason this cannot be done, but for the intransigence of the academic community wanting to maintain its bureaucratic stranglehold on American kids.

Easily 80 or 90% of the curriculum for university education could be completed online at a fraction of the cost without a significant loss of effectiveness. A billion or two taken out of the Dept of Education's budget and redirected toward the development of workable curricula would make a huge difference.
