Funding a challenge

Besides supplying IPP contracted firms, Lalu says Black Lite Energy is also targeting low-income housing. The firm has developed a unique lighting model for LED lights powered by solar panels that can last approximately 13 hours. Lalu anticipates significant uptake for this considering that Government plans to build half a million RDP houses every year.

It’s not going to be easy though. Renewable energy is a capital-intensive venture, and Black Lite doesn’t have the R2bn it needs to erect the plant. Lalu says the biggest challenge is to convince potential funders that there’s sufficient demand for the solar panels it wants to produce. So far it has letters of funding support from the IDC and the National Empowerment Fund.

Though the solar plant is a key priority for Lalu, he says reveals that it’s just one of three renewable energy projects he’s working on. He’s acquired a licencse from German firm Alphakat to introduce technology in SA that converts waste that contains has hydrocarbons into diesel – a project fuel giant Sasol is interested in.
