and its not a response to the general point that Peter raised, which can be expressed as "A taking from B to give to C, isn't compassion on the part of A".

Not to try to get into Peter's mind (God forbid!) but his meaning appeared to me to be that we don't need government because "human compassion" will be adequate to take care of the needs of the unfortunate among us. Which isn't the case, either historically or currently.

Sure there are many compassionate people. And there are also many selfish people. Should only the compassionate carry the societies burden?
