"Of course to the older Hebrew there was the idea if all the criteria of sacrifices were met , one acknowledged all the rites of diet , prayer & proper celebration , one could be relatively free from Sin all obligations fulfilled..." In Leviticus they used two goats One was sacrificed to please Yahweh. The other was driven into the desert carrying all the sins of the tribe and allowed to escape. Today this "escape" goat is a "scape goat". The goat takes the wrongdoings of others and suffers in the wilderness of social condemnation. The fellow who was to drive the goat out had to go through a thorough cleansing before being allowed back in camp. These advanced desert wanderers had it all figured out! ;-)
