THIESSEN'S VIEW IS ''PERVERSE, DESTRUCTIVE AND PLAIN WRONG'', WHITE
OTTAWA, Nov. 27 /CNW/ - ''I want to express my indignation over Tuesday's increase in short-term interest rates,'' states Bob White, president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) in a letter sent to Mr. Gordon Thiessen, Governor of the Bank of Canada. ''Your argument is that the Canadian economy 'may be producing at full capacity towards the end of 1998' and that 'inflation pressures could mount' unless monetary policy is tightened'' explains White. ''This view of the world is perverse, destructive and plain wrong.'' White notes that given an unemployment rate of more than 9 per cent, the jobs' crisis is the real problem, not inflationary pressures on the distant horizon.
