"Conservative" is a broad concept, and yes even limiting consideration to the US conservative political movement, you still have a loosely defined broad tent and one that can change over time. (Its the same for other broad political groups, "liberal" probably covers and even broader area.)

But for all of that there still is a meaningful conservative political tradition in the US, and not one that means "reluctant to change or take risks". Many conservatives and many liberals have such a reluctance, but their political ideologies are not defined by it.
