Team USA can afford to make a lot of mistakes because it has the world reserve currency/geography/military. If and when those advantages disappear, it must inflate the debt away and start being much more careful.

I don't pay much attention to statistical comparisons between Team USA and individual Europe components like Italy and Luxembourg.

Data on USA vs. Europe (as a whole) might be useful, but I fear the diverging paths of the crisis in these two regions would cause comparison problems.
