That is just cloud file backup, like google drive or microsoft sky drive. You can save files there, but it would not be useful or even possible to do a system backup. I would not attempt to do system backups to USB 2.0 drives. They are too slow for that purpose.

RE:There is a big red X on the icons under the photo tab.

I am guessing it would indicate the files are not actually on the drive, but are shortcuts to a file location. I have never seen that.

Try plugging that drive into a computer, NOT the computer that it was attached to before and see what the other computer is seeing for those photos. What is the extension for the photos? .jpeg?
