and bill farley's fruit of the loom wasn't too bad either, and that was @#!^sub ubi.

but your point is very well taken. i was on the periphery of that business in the 80's, and what we were looking for was predictable cash flows under worst case scenarios. that requirement lends itself to meat and potatoes businesses with track records thru several cycles. technological change is too volatile for that.
