I attended a seminar given by the Internet business expert from the MIT Slone Business School. (I can not remember his name) Anyway he believes, currently that the Internet is going to be successful to those companies that use it as an extension of a bricks and mortor business. I personally asked him about concepts like amazon.com and it was his opinion they would not be able to compete with B&N and friends. He certainly believes commerce on the Internet is the future but each business is different and will find how best to use the internet to be an addition to an already successful enterprise.

Believe you me I am not an expert, but there are some interesting times ahead.
