The political differences are by and large between liberals and conservatives. The dixiecrats were dems because the dem party is the workers party.

Today most conservatives live in the Republican party and all liberals live in the Democratic, Green or indepenmdent party.

But yes, it was primarily the southern conservatives who fought integration. But after the 64 civil rights act (driven by liberals) the Republican's saw an opportunity to co opt them by appealing to their racism.

Pretty sick if you ask me.
