Yes, Phelps has more Olympic medals that anyone else. But I think it's an exaggeration to call him the greatest Olympian ever. He just happens to compete in a sport with many events on the schedule, creating lots of opportunities for medals. I respect his accomplishments but IMO the greatest ever designation seems not to be justified.
