Microsoft Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. have approached
Northern Telecom Ltd. and Lucent Technolgies Inc. to try to win
support for a universal standard for Internet modems with speeds
of up to 1 megabit per second, much faster than the current
maximum of 56 kilobits per second, Business Week reported in its
''Inside Wall Street'' column. Key to the hoped-for super-fast
modems are technologies developed by Northern Telecom and
Rockwell International Corp. While there are obstacles to an
agreement, success in the talks could speed by more than a year
the arrival of simultaneous voice and Internet access over the
same phone line, said unidentified executives familiar with the
talks, the magazine reported.
On Monday, Intel said it created four new business groups in
a bid to align its products more closely with emerging trends in
the personal computer industry.
