8/3/12 Contest Update
When China’s Olympic swimmer, Ye Shiwen, churned through the water at super-human speed, skeptics wondered whether she was on “something.” Similarly, one wonders what investors were on as they raced to gobble up stocks Friday morning. However, regrettably, whatever the stimulant wary biotech investors didn’t indulge and a number of popular portfolio picks (e.g., INCY, DNDN, ARRY, MNTA, EXEL, SGEN, SGMO) had an especially tough time.
Nonetheless, at Friday’s close the Contest median was still up 29.33% YTD (vs. up 40.57% YTD a week ago). In comparison, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 27.04% YTD (vs. up 32.13% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 13.92% YTD (vs. up 13.55% YTD a week ago).
DONS’ portfolio, up 75.41% YTD, remained in the lead. RKRW's portfolio, up 70.73% YTD, held on to second place, while my own portfolio, up 55.63% YTD, snuck into third place.
At Friday's close, 4 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the red, with 19 of the 38 portfolios beating the NBI.
No update next Friday as it’s my wife’s birthday week and we’ll be commemorating it out of town.
