Zeev, it so happens that tunneling was discovered not by Josephson, but well before he was born. Josephson discovered a particular kind of tunneling. Furthermore, tunneling was not discovered at IBM. I don't know why you're trying to stick IBM into everything, they're just a minor, tiny part of technological development, and even much less of scientific. Single electron tuneling was discoverd not at IBM, but elsewhere. And, tunneling is not hopping. I gave you the nunbers for Si latice spacing and already explained that there are several atoms within this spacing, so interatomic distance is 2.3A in Si.
I don't know what is the point of these discussions. If you're interested in simple science, technology - just take a classs in your local university.
