Brocade, Whistle Snare $20M in VC Funding

Two makers of high-speed network access devices have snared $20 million apiece in venture funding.

Brocade Communications Systems Inc., a maker of gigabit Ethernet switches[Ed. Note - NOT!], said it had raised $21 million from Andreas Berchtolsheim; Bay Partners; Crosspoint Venture Partners; Davidow Ventures; Imperial Bank; JAFCO American Ventures Inc.; LSI Logic Inc.; Mohr; Norwest Venture Partners; and Weiss, Peck & Greer Venture Partners.

The company described the financing as its "last venture round" and said revenue grew from $200,000 in the quarter ended Jan. 31 to $6.5 million in the quarter ended Oct. 31, projecting shipments of its SilkWorm fiber switch at 12,000 to 15,000 for calendar 1997.

Whistle Communications Corp., which markets the InterJet desktop Internet access device for internal and Internet e-mail, Web access and Web publishing, said it closed $20.5 million in Series C funding through existing investors Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) and Mayfield Fund, with funds from new investors totaling $12.8 million. Whistle has now raised more than $32 million since its founding in 1995.
