One problem with compact external HDD like the WD Passport is that there is no ventilation of the drive than can increase heat that could lead to premature failure. I use an external hd cases that has a fan.

Compact HDD are great for traveling but I would be cautions using them as a sole backup. I use carbonite, an external HDD in an inclosure that has a fan in addition to making regular imaging of the system and data.
