Richard .. a very interesting observation.
As per your post:
>>A person should objectively know right from wrong. It is not a matter of "culture".<<

I contend that it may be exactly a matter of ones culture.
Let me try to illustrate my point...

What of the WW2 Japanese kamikaze pilot who willingly sacrifices his plane and his life. He does so willingly because his culture has engrained in him from youth and his emperor reinforces the concept that all who willingly kill themselves will be raised to a higher level in the world beyond. As per my understanding of the matter I believe this was considered to to the case. It was in fact The culture of the Japanese people of that day that dictated to give ones life in this way was a sign of commitment to a much higher cause.
It was in fact transcending ones human existence. What great stuff if you looked at it threw their eyes. The ends thus logically justified the means in this setting.. For them, it becomes totally logical and very Right as it where to proceed with killing one self.

Does this make any sense?

We all look at this as a westerners and see it as total lunacy.

Yet, they saw it as almost a god send.
A way to raise oneself to a much higher level. An opportunity they were given by their ermperor that would not be given to others in their culture. They looked at themselves as almost like the chosen few. Such an honor. We looked at is as lambs being led to slaughter.
Who was right and who is wrong here? Ahhhh... it basically boils down to the culture IMHO here.

Is committing mass suicide in this manner right or wrong?

Ask someone in the west an its a no brainier right! It's wrong! Everyone knows that. Human life is precious and should never to taken.
But... even in the west we find exceptions don't we? We find ways where the ends justify the means.

The point I try to make above is not all people live by western values.

To understand the motivation one must understand the underlying culture of the people your dealing with..

When it comes to the hard-line fundamentalist's of Iran and Iraq, I personally have no clue as to the rules their culture degrees to them that motivate their actions. So.. How can I as a westerner try to negotiate with something I don't understand? I must try to understand it before I negotiate is how. But, I don't think we do that! JMHO but I really think we never have!

It is better for me to at least go in knowing I don't have a clue what makes these guys tick than to go in thinking I know how to deal with these people because we all play by the same rule book and essentially all have the same values.

This to me is stupidity and western arrogance. This is the 1 single fundamental reason I truely beleive is why the people in the region do not embrace us. We have never really sat down and tried to understand their culture. To busy talking and to all knowing to listen.

As per the harline religious fundamentalists in the region!
Personally, the litttle i know about it , the more I disagree with any aspects of it. But. on the same token. I should have the common cautiously not to judge unless I wish to be judged. So.. till I become more edgucated by someone who lives there and knows what is really going on and why, I will reserve my final judgement till I know what I'm talking about.

My father once gave me some good advice. He said son.. god gave you 2 ears and only 1 mouth. He did this so we could use one twice as often as the other without any effort to do so.

Our politicians I think should take this advice.
