There is nothing historical about her. Sources such as the Talmud make up stories (as they do for anything which appears in the bible) but they are just ridiculous men running their heads. I would like to think that she was historical in the unknown Persian history. Her name in some accounts means "best of women" and this is her symbolic meaning for me. She represents self respect and dignity and courage--refusing to give the "oxygen of respectability" to shallow and useless tyrants. Tyrants not only of the body--but of spirit, as well. As a symbol of freedom, I suspect that her exile gave her freedom. I like to think she retreated to a high mountain to avoid the petty ignorance she had the misfortune to be born into. And there she found one of her own kind with whom to live a life of value and self esteem. And that is my take on it. -g-
