Alter NRG is providing plasma gasification technology that will be used for an unprecedented waste-to-energy plant in northeast England.
Industrial gas company Air Products and Chemicals Inc. is leading the project that will turn waste into hydrogen gas for vehicles and some 50,000 homes. The company says it will be the biggest plant of its kind in the world, and estimates that the project will divert 350,000 metric tonnes of non-recyclable waste from landfills in the UK annually.
The Tees Valley plant will have a capacity of 50 megawatts. The hydrogen fuel will be moved to Heathrow Airport, where it can be used to power new vehicles that are expected to come to the UK in the near future.
The project will use AFC Energy alkaline fuel cells.
The Westinghouse advanced gasification technology provided by Alter NRG, a provider of EfW technologies, will offer a more efficient, cleaner conversion of waste-to-power than traditional EfW technologies. It has the potential to generate a wider range of useful products, including heat, hydrogen, chemicals and fuels.
Alter NRG CEO Walter Howard, in a July 26, 2012 announcement about the sale of CleanEnergy Developments Corp., said the company now has a “singular focus on the Westinghouse Plasma Gasification technology”, which he believes is the is “the best in class and has hit a commercial tipping point.”
Air Products notes that the new power plant will create approximately 700 new jobs during its construction phase, which is nearly underway.
Air Products has received the essential environmental and planning approvals. The facility is due to enter service in 2014.
