I've been familiar with the use of ozone for over ten years here in our NW salmon processing industry. Primarily used in the making of ice for cooling down fish on the boats & in the plants. Remarkable in that it provided a "shelf" life far beyond fish that didn't have this ozone ice used on it. Also, it was used in a chicken processing plant whereby the water used to clean the carcusses was run thru the process after it was used & it was essentially clean enough to use again, although for one reason or another, they discharged the "old" water into the town's sewer system. The folks that installed this system were also working on setting up 3rd world ozone systems for use in those countrys who needed clean water in their villages.
The only problem encountered was the fact that the ozone tended to degrade the rubber bushings & hoses on the machinery that was in contact with it, but over a period of several years. There was also several other systems they were working on but I've been retired for awhile now & haven't followed up on them.
One other company that is pursuing the problem of contamination of our food supply is Maxwell Technologies thru their "Pure-Plus" technology. They have just landed a large contract in one of the US's largest fast food companies as well as a contract in Japan for a like application. I'm not looking to tote it...just another twist on what all is happening in this large & rapidly expanding field. I hold shares in both & fully expect both to be very good plays for '98.
