I don't think it's a matter of caliber that prompted the switch, but more importantly the unreliability of the Beretta 92 (M9). Pretty pistol, but get it dirty and it frequently misfires. It's also a big gun for such a compact caliber round. I'm not certain why the armed forces haven't moved on to Glocks.
