That might be because it currently has the highest homicide rate in the country.
I don't think that's the main reason. Seems like Chicago is just very spread out, so there's tons of supply from developments everywhere. My relatives live in pretty safe, nice suburbs and the prices are still cheap.

Maybe it's also due to Midwest economy, although I'd think Chicago is less auto-dependent than other cities.


Actually, I was being a little cheeky with my response. <g>

I think it may be a combination of things...........unrestricted land like you mention and there is room for expansion..........its fairly flat although Lake Michigan is an impediment. Job growth in Chicago has been fairly lack luster for the past 10-12 years. And except for the central core and along Michigan Avenue, there has been heavy out-migration and the city's population declined during the aught years whereas NYC, SF, Boston and LA all experienced an increase in their city populations.
