Indeed it does look that at least on a country level gun ownership percent is completely uncorrelated with murder rate. It looks like sub-Sahara countries, some Latin American countries, and former Soviet Union countries are murder champions but have relatively small gun ownership rates. And some very high gun ownership states in Europe have pretty low murder rates. I was surprised at the huge murder rate in the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

The US has progressed a lot in the last couple of decades. The biggest problem remains murder among blacks, which is five times greater than murder among whites. US white murder rate is not much higher than European murder rates, even though US whites own a heck of a lot more guns.
