As for gills - some people are born with webs between their fingers or toes, and a few can lift their upper lip to seal off their nostrils. Perhaps a residue of our ancestors when they were "aquatic apes", a controversial but interesting theory about why we have no fur but subcutaneous fat, walk upright, etc.
