You worked with a company, and they hired no blacks, therefore companies in general had no interest in hiring black workers, even when they could pay them less?
If koan would have dug a little deeper he might have learned that the reason that no blacks were being hired (in 1960) was because that is want the Union wanted. So management was just "keeping the union happy" by not hiring blacks.

But that doesn't fit into koan's narrative about the purpose of Unions.
