Tampa Mayor: 'Absolutely We're Prepared to Call It Off' -CNN
Last update: 8/22/2012 11:44:20 AM

The mayor of Tampa, Fla., said Wednesday the city is prepared if a hurricane hits during the Republican National Convention next week.

Speaking on CNN, Mayor Bob Buckhorn said they are prepared to cancel the convention.

"Absolutely we're prepared to call it off," Buckhorn was quoted saying on CNN's website. "I mean, human safety and human life trumps politics. I think the RNC recognizes that."

The National Hurricane Center reported in its 11 a.m. EDT advisory that tropical storm Isaac, currently approaching the Lesser Antilles in the Atlantic Ocean, could run up Florida's western coastline at hurricane strength by early Monday. There is no certainty it will do so, however.

"We have contingency plan after contingency plan," Buckhorn told CNN. "We are ready in the event that it happens. I don't think it's going to be a factor in this particular convention. But we are prepared in the event that it is."
