Pretty much, although it's easy to forget when you don't use it... next year my wife and I are going to Zurich and spend a few weeks in the surrounding areas, it should come in handy then, and then we'll make our way to Venice further south... I also learned Italian because some of my business partners are Italian and reside in Rome... I really love languages... I studied German for three years while at undergraduate school, both classroom and spoken German... my third year instructor was actually a foreign exchange professor from Klagenfurt, we became good friends and we did some weekend sailing and double dating with some of the girls in the class and we spoke only German on those dates... at the beginning it was intimidating not to understand everything, but after three years I felt pretty fluent and was able to get by pretty well... I also spent several years in Japan and learned that language as well... before I left Japan I was actually dreaming in Japanese, it freaked me out the first time that ever happened... I also can converse in Mandarin and can read the Chinese newspaper, I studied Mandarin also for three years and as an assignment we had to translate the Confucian Analects and the four great books including the Tao...
