Degree field is a big issue, but it's even more complicated than that. There's also a private vs. public sector issue. Most new jobs are being created in the public sector which favors older workers, but that advantage for older workers mostly disappears in the private sector. So in today's scarce job market it is not only what you want to do, but who you will be working for and all are affected in some way.
