Romney undercut his economy issues by stating that "big business is doing fine." That's indistinguishable from the Obama line a Republican PAC uses in TV ads, that "the private sector is doing fine" mocking Obama.

Obama was referring to the jobs growth month by month in the private sector, while the government sector has been (or had been, then) losing jobs. Romney doesn't keep all the issues in his head, so he makes misstatements when he speaks off the cuff, or he conflicts with his campaign themes and strategy. Stephenopolous or Carville in 1992 knew the value of focus and came up with the "it's the economy, stupid" theme.

By October, Romney may be using a TelePrompTer.
