Re: anyone with 1/2 a brain takes every single tax deduction they're entitled to take when they file.

And anyone with a complex tax return and 2/2 a brain does not. First, it would take too much effort to keep the records. Second, any good accountant would hold back deductions for possible use in an amended return or if an audit shows some issues that can be negotiated. For those who itemize deductions and can deduct sales taxes paid, other than the exception for a car, who keeps every receipt for sales tax paid, to use the real number rather than the amount in the IRS table?

One thing that was striking in Romney's comments was that he took every deduction he was entitled to, or paid not one cent more than was required, very similar language to what I'm replying to. That's a red flag because it doesn't ring true. He would probably slough it off as loose language for a public audience, or a reference to relying on his accountants to take every deduction (a euphemism for doing their job). But why has he still not filed his 2011 return? Are his accountants going to take the full 6 months? Is he or are they delaying the filing until after he is nominated? Why aren't Republicans asking to see the 2011 return before the Convention? Or, is he delaying the filing until after the first debate? IOW is the delay to get the reports needed to do the returns or a political strategy?

If Romney and Ryan were both being interviewed for a job or two jobs and one requirement was to submit 2 years of tax returns, Ryan would go to the next step and Romney would be rejected or told to reschedule his final interview after he has submitted the 2011 return. If they were both applying for a mortgage, Ryan would have been approved as Prime or whatever it's called when paperwork is complete, and Romney's mortgage application would be classified as Alt-A.
