You, know, there are a bunch of texting apps available for unjailbroken iPhones.

A simple search for SMS on the App Store turned them up easily.

And you can send emoticons using the basic Messages app. Just install the Emoji keyboard.

Your other complaints might be valid.

I think one reason the Messages app has been kept stripped down is that they've been working to make it operate cross-platform, and to all kinds of addresses. I can now carry on a text conversation on my iPhone, and continue it on my Mac when I get home. And a lot of my messages bypass the SMS networks, so they don't count toward my cellular bill. I imagine they'll add the frillier features now that they've gotten the behind-the-scenes complexity worked out.
