Are both devices on iCloud? Are the Settings the same for Messages \| Receive At It might be that with iOS 5 it is limited and iOS 6 will extend it to Macs. "iMessage lets you send text messages to anyone with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5."
